Steven McGregor is an award-winning First Nations Writer and Director from Darwin.
Steven co-wrote the feature film Sweet Country with David Tranter. Directed by Warwick Thornton and Produced by David Jowsey and Greer Simpkin. The film screened in competition at the 2017 Venice Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Prize. Sweet Country won the Platform Prize at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, screened in competition at the BFI London Film Festival and has been selected to screen at numerous international film festivals. In 2018 Sweet Country won the AWGIE & AACTA awards for best original feature film script and Best Film.
Steven wrote two episodes on the critically acclaimed TV drama Mystery Road series 1 which won the 2018 AACTA Award for Best Television Drama Series and the Logie for Most Popular Drama Series. Steven also wrote two episodes on series 2 of Mystery Road and series 1 of Mystery Road Origin which won the 2020 & 2022 AACTA Award for Best Television Drama. Along with co-writers Blake Ayshford & Dylan River Steven was nominated in the 2022 AACTA’s for Best Screenplay in Television for episode 6 Mystery Road Origin. Steven wrote episodes one and six on Mystery Road Origin series 2.
Pretty Boy Blue, an episode Steven wrote for the drama series Redfern Now, won the AACTA Award for Best Screenplay in television in 2013 & he was nominated in the same category in 2014 for series 2 of Redfern Now for his screenplay, Babe in Arms. Steven’s screenplay for Promise Me, the Redfern Now telemovie, was nominated for an AWGIE in 2015.
Steven wrote episode one and co-wrote episode two of the acclaimed ABC series Goolagong. He also wrote episodes three and five of the Netflix series, Territory and was nominated for an AWGIE in 2025 for Episode 3.
Wolfram, a companion film to Sweet Country, was co-written by Steven. The film was selected to screen in official competition at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.
