Screen Producers Australia (SPA) today announced that Aussie funnyman Matt Okine will join the who’s who of the Australian screen production industry as the host of the 22nd Annual Screen Producers Australia Awards on the Gold Coast in March 2024.
Matt’s quick wit and charisma have garnered him a reputation as one of Australia’s favourite comedians. Having spent over 15 years appearing on screens and stages locally and internationally, he knows how to hold a crowd and have them laughing out loud.
His career has gone from strength to strength since his days co-hosting Triple J radio’s hugely successful national Breakfast Show, and after hanging up his headphones, he went into production on the TV adaption of his award-winning semi-autobiographical stand-up show The Other Guy for Australian streamer Stan.
In 2023, Matt starred in, and executive produced the long-awaited reboot of the hit Australian series Mother and Son, starring alongside the household name Denise Scott. The AACTA-nominated performer has appeared in several other TV shows, including Stateless, Orange Is The New Brown, and Doctor Doctor. He’s also appeared in feature films, including Aquamarine, Dora and the Lost City of Gold and Christmas Ransom.
Matt is currently working on a film adaptation of his novel, Being Black N Chicken & Chips with SPA members Wooden Horse Productions and the Oscar-nominated production team at Aquarius Films.
Matt’s accolades are extensive, having won several awards, including the ARIA Award for Best Comedy Release, The Melbourne Comedy Festival’s Director’s Choice Award, and the Best Newcomer Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (which he shared with Ronny Chieng), as well as being nominated for Best Comedy Performer at the Helpmann Awards.
The SPA Awards celebrate great Australian screen productions, honouring the skill, accomplishment and imagination of the SPA member businesses who bring these stories to life. All Award recipients will be honoured at the prestigious SPA Awards ceremony on the Gold Coast on Thursday, 21 March 2024, the final day of SCREEN FOREVER 38.
