Biography
A Native of Melbourne, Australia, Michael Rymer studied at the University of Southern California where his short films earned him the Warner Communications Scholarship for Directing. He made his directorial debut from his own screenplay Angel Baby, a tale of two schizophrenics who fall in love and try to live on their own. The film, which stars John Lynch and Jacqueline MacKenzie, premiered at Sundance in 1996 and earned seven Australian Film Institute Awards including Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Screenplay as well as best actor and actress. It also won four Australian Film. Critics Circle Awards, and the Australian Human Rights Award. In 1997, Rymer directed Miramax’s In Too Deep starring Stanley Tucci, Omar Epps, L.L. Cool J. and Nia Long, for Warner Bros. In 2001, he directed Queen of the Damned starring Aaliyah, Stuart Townsend and Lena Olen. Rymer has directed two improvisational features: Allie and Me, Dyan Cannon, Lanie Kazan and Harry Hamlin and Perfume with Jeff Goldblum, Paul Sorvino, Michelle Williams, Peter Gallagher, Jared Harris, Mariel Hemingway and Rita Wilson and many others. Rymer delved into producing, as well as writing and directing the Australian feature, Face to Face, based on the acclaimed play by David Williamson, starring Sigrid Thornton, Luke Ford and Vince Collosimo. The film won forty awards at international festivals. Rymer directed the reimagined miniseries and pilot of Battlestar Galactica, staring Edward James Olmos and Mary MacDonald. BSG won Michael a Hugo Award, a Peabody Award and an AFI Award. Rymer was nominated for an Emmy for directing the three hour series finale. Rymer was invited to become the Supervising Producer/Director on BSG, a role he performed for several years on the show. He was then invited to take on a similar role on NBC’s Hannibal, where he also directed a dozen episodes including the series finale. Other pilots Rymer directed include The 17th Precinct starring Eamonn Walker & Peter Fonda, Person’s Unknown, starring Chadwick Boseman and Alan Ruck, Haunted starring Matthew Fox, and A House Divided starring Dylan McDermott and Jason Wiles. Rymer has directed episodes of Flash Forward for ABC Television, as well as episodes of The Killing, Longmire, Jessica Jones, Man in the High Castle, and American Horror Story for which he was nominated for a DGA Award. Rymer has recently directed several prestigious Australian Miniseries - Deadline Gallipoli for Matchbox Pictures and Foxtel, and the finale for of Picnic at Hanging Rock for Fremantle Media and Foxtel, The Gloaming for ABC International and STAN. And the opening and closing episodes of Fires, an anthology miniseries about the Australian Bushfires of 2019, for the Australian Broadcasting Company and NBC Universal, for which he received an Australian Director’s Guild Nomination.
