Biography
Mary Duong is a queer Vietnamese writer and filmmaker treading with care on Turrbal and Jagera Country. A child of Vietnamese refugees, their practice grapples with the intricacies of cultural expectations, the weight of family history, and the neverending journey of queer self-discovery. Their queer drama web series 'TWO WEEKS', has over 2.3 million views on YouTube and won Best Web Series at the SAE ATOM Awards 2018. In 2019, Mary collaborated with Rachel Maxine Anderson to create factual short-form series 'BANANAS' for SBS and Screen Queensland, an official selection at SXSW Film Festival 2020 and Inside Out LGBT Film Festival 2020. They worked as a Digital Content Producer on Ludo Studio’s 'THE STRANGE CHORES' through Screen Australia’s Gender Matters attachment initiative. Mary received a writer’s placement through Screen Queensland’s Greg Coote Scholarship 2020 and completed a Director's Attachment on Fremantle’s 'ROCK ISLAND MYSTERIES' in 2021. Inspired by riot grrrl bands from their messy teen years, Mary co-wrote and produced ‘VIV’S SILLY MANGO’ for ABC Me and Screen Australia’s The Kaleidoscope Project, which was selected to Outfest Fusion 2023 and Viet Film Fest 2024, now streaming on ABC iView. Mary co-created online series ‘MANGROVE MANSION’ with Rhianna Malezer, which was shortlisted for SBS Digital Originals 2024. They are currently developing their first feature, working title ‘SÔNG CÓ KHÚC, NGƯỜI CÓ LÚC’. Finding the heart of a story with curiosity and care, Mary’s slate dances across the personal and the political.
