Description

We speak with Indigenous filmmakers from Turtle Island (Canada, U.S.A.), Aotearoa (New Zealand) and what is now called Australia, about telling stories through genuine collaboration with First Nations peoples and communities. Pathways & Protocols: a filmmaker's guide to working with Indigenous people, culture and concepts by Screen Australia and Terri Janke, Onscreen Protocols & Pathways: A Media Production Guide to Working with First Nations, Metis and Inuit Communities, Cultures, Concepts and Stories prepared by imagiNATIVE are documents that resonate with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP). The panellists discuss the relevance of using a framework of collaboration, rather than consultation, to support the rights of Indigenous peoples to control our intellectual and cultural property (ICIP), which is an internationally-recognised term based on the principles of self-determination.
