Biography
Richard has over twenty-five years of experience in the television industry, with creative and strategic leadership positions across a wide range of genres including factual, ob doc, natural history, true crime, history, arts, social experiment, science, impact and entertainment.

In January 2024 he joined Screen Australia, the Federal Government agency as Head of Documentary. Richard is responsible for driving the strategic direction for the agency’s documentary funding programs as well as implementing broader content department priorities.

Prior to joining Screen Australia, Richard was Acting Head of Factual and Culture at the ABC. In this role he oversaw the development, commissioning and production of an extensive slate including Stuff The British Stole, War on Waste, The Way We Wore, Better Date Than Never, This Is Going To Be Big, Old People’s Home for Teenagers, The ABC Of, Back In Time For The Corner Shop, Designing A Legacy, Living With Devils, Tony Armstrong’s Extra-Ordinary Things and I Was Actually There.

Richard held other senior roles while at the ABC including Managing Editor Factual and Culture (Queerstralia, The Black Hand, Miriam Margolyes: Almost Australian, The People’s Republic of Mallacoota, Quoll Farm, The Whiteley Art Scandal, Ithaka: A Fight To Free Julian Assange, Knowing The Score, The Platypus Guardian, The Family Court Murders, Australia’s Wild Odyssey, Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra, Cracking Covid), Manager of Development for Factual, Entertainment and Partnerships (Ningaloo Nyinggulu, Shaun Micallef’s On The Sauce, Finding The Archibald, Fight For Planet A) and Supervising Executive Producer (Gruen, Julia Zemiro’s Home Delivery, Lukewarm Sex, Fresh Blood, #7 Days Later).

Prior to working at the ABC, Richard was a director/producer/writer on numerous series for Australian broadcasters as well as Discovery and Discovery Asia. Richard began his career in the UK at companies including Bazal, Endemol, Keo Films and RDF Media, working on factual content for ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, National Geographic, and ABC America.

Many of the documentaries and factual series he has been associated with have won major Australian and International industry awards.
