Screen Producers Australia (SPA) is delighted to announce that multi award-winning Australian comedian, writer and performer Rhys Nicholson will host the 24th Annual SPA Awards, taking place on Queensland's Gold Coast on Thursday 30 April 2026.
A distinctive voice in Australian comedy, Rhys will bring their sharp wit, intelligent humour and commanding stage presence to one of the screen industry’s most anticipated nights.
With a celebrated career spanning stand-up, television and writing, Rhys Nicholson has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most compelling comedic talents. Their stand-up special Nice People Nice Things Nice Situations was released globally on Netflix, earning an AACTA Award nomination for Best Stand Up Comedy Special, with further nominations in 2024 recognising both their performance and writing.
Rhys’ screen credits include roles in The Imperfects (Netflix) and Fisk, alongside appearances across all seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under, Taskmaster Australia and Thank God You’re Here. They are also a familiar face across Australian television, regularly appearing on programs including The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, Spicks and Specks, Question Everything and Would I Lie To You.
In addition to their on-screen work, Rhys has proven themselves as a sought-after host, having led major broadcasts including the ARIA Awards, ABC’s New Year’s Eve Broadcast, and the WorldPride Broadcast. Their experience hosting high-profile live events makes them a natural fit to lead the SPA Awards.
SPA CEO Matthew Deaner said Rhys brings a unique perspective and energy to the Awards.
“Rhys is an exceptional performer with a distinctive voice and an ability to connect with audiences across the industry. Their intelligence, humour and experience hosting major live events make them the perfect choice to lead this year’s SPA Awards.”
The SPA Awards celebrate great Australian screen productions, honouring the skill, accomplishment and imagination of SPA member businesses who bring these stories to life.
All award recipients will be honoured at the SPA Awards ceremony on Thursday 30 April 2026, the final evening of SCREEN FOREVER 40, at The Star on the Gold Coast.
