Biography
Katharine Thornton is the CEO of Sharmill Films, Australia’s longest-running independent film distributor.
She has overseen the release of numerous Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Palme d’Or–winning films, including Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness and his upcoming The Entertainment System is Down; Florian Zeller’s The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman; and Lady Macbeth, starring Florence Pugh.
Katharine also works directly with world-leading cultural institutions—including the National Theatre (London), The Australian Ballet, and The Metropolitan Opera (New York) bringing the best of the performing arts to Australian cinemas.
Since joining Sharmill Films in 2010, she has developed a reputation for her uncanny knack in nurturing content and consistently identifying filmmakers and stories that resonate on screen. She began her career working for Academy Award–winning producer Emile Sherman, studied at Cambridge Business School, and is widely regarded for delivering exceptional cinematic experiences to audiences across Australia.
