Description

Producers, creatives and execs active in the international comedy market discuss the current global opportunities and challenges for Australian comedy content.

The crop of current and forthcoming Australian scripted comedy series has achieved significant international reach in distribution, financing and market impact.

Backed by CBS International, Binge’s Colin from Accounts has made major sales at MIP and the L.A. screenings. Foxtel’s Upright Season 2 airs to acclaim on co-producer Sky (UK). ABC smash hit Fisk triumphed at France’s Series Mania. While no less than three current animated comedies from creator Michael Cusack and Princess Pictures are US commissions by Fox or Adult Swim.

But does this success reflect upswing in international appetite for Australian comedy? Is it just a case of good shows at the right time? Has this success paved a path for other Australian comedies? Where are the opportunities among global broadcasters, platforms and distributors?  At what stage will they come into Australian comedies? Are there certain styles attracting more interest? And must they be talent-lead to sell?
