Description

“We Become What We Behold.” What price culture in a global village?

How can we create a place for every story and a story for every place?

In the 1960s Marshall McLuhan declared that mass media was creating a global village. Now with streaming, it is hard not to think we are all citizens of this village. What does this mean for culture? Are we sliding inexorably into making more and more content for global citizens, at the expense of our own culture? In Australia, government support in all its forms is crictical to the prosperity of the screen industry. Yet the government’s primary reason for providing support is cultural. So, what’s worth protecting anyway? How should we do it and who decides? Here to discuss these issues is a panel of Australian and international players.
